Mylar Balloon Safety

Mylar

Mylar balloons are metallic, shiny, helium-filled balloons -- and are the cause of thousands of power outages each year when they come into contact with power lines. Stay safe with these tips.

Mylar balloons cause power outage incidents in Alameda every year. When released, these metallic, helium-filled balloons can touch high-voltage lines, resulting in explosions and outages.

To prevent mylar balloon-related outages and other electrical incidents, follow these safety tips:

  • Avoid using Mylar balloons near power lines.
  • Securely tie helium-filled Mylar balloons to a weight and never remove it.
  • Keep Mylar balloons indoors if possible; never release them outside.
  • Don't bundle Mylar balloons together.
  • Never retrieve balloons, kites, or toys caught in power lines.
  • Stay away from fallen or dangling power lines. Always assume downed wires are energized and dangerous.

Report downed lines by calling 911. To report an outage or objects caught in power lines, call 510-748-3900.
