Alameda Municipal Power Receives National Recognition for Providing Safe and Reliable Power
Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is one of only 176 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities to earn platinum Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) recognition from the American Public Power Association (APPA). The designation, which is valid for two years, was announced today at the 2012 APPA Engineering & Operations Technical Conference in Cleveland, Ohio.
The RP3 recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate basic proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement. Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.
“This is a well-deserved honor,” said Marie Gilmore, City of Alameda Mayor. “And it’s very fitting as we celebrate AMP’s 125th anniversary of providing community-owned electricity to the City.”
“The AMP team works hard to provide safe, reliable and responsive service to our community,” added Greg Hamm, Public Utilities Board president. “We are honored to receive this designation, which recognizes this hard work and our commitment to our customers.”
In addition to performing best practices in safety and reliability, there are also financial benefits associated with the RP3 designation, such as improved bond ratings and cost savings from workers compensation and insurance. This contributes to the financial health of AMP as a locally owned municipal utility and provides community value with competitive electric rates.
“The RP3 designation is significant,” said Girish Balachandran, General Manager for AMP, “because it enables public electric utilities to examine their performance against measurable standards and then be recognized when they are performing at a high level based on those standards.”
This is the seventh year the RP3 recognition has been offered by the APPA. The APPA is a national organization representing more than 2,000 non-profit and community- and state-owned electric utilities.
