Public Utilities Board Adopts 2013 Budget

Last night the City of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board approved Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP) $57 million budget for fiscal year 2013. The budget reflects the priorities set by the Board through its adopted strategic plan, the annual planning workshop held in January 2012, and the annual budget workshop held in April 2012. The Board also approved a transfer of $2.8 million to the City of Alameda’s General Fund.

Some of the major initiatives in the spending plan for next year include integrating technology for enhanced service delivery and operational effectiveness and safety, workforce development, renewable energy sales and greenhouse gas reduction planning, cost of service study and rate planning, and customer experience enhancements. Additionally, AMP continues to take all feasible steps to control costs, and operational costs remain fairly flat with power costs as AMP's largest expense at 53%. The utility has reduced its staffing to below 1995 levels and has streamlined processes and implemented technology solutions to gain efficiencies and lower operational costs.

AMP is one of the City of Alameda's largest businesses, serves the community with a reliability record within the top quartile of all western U.S. utilities, and is a leader in providing renewable power. As a community-owned and locally operated electric system, AMP is a direct contributor to the City of Alameda’s economic well-being and quality of life. In fact, AMP’s lower rates contribute to the local economy and save Alameda customers $10 million a year.
