Public Utilities Board Approves 2014 Budget

At its regular meeting on June 24, the City of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board approved Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP) $64.8 million budget for fiscal year 2014. The Board also approved a transfer of $2.8 million to the City of Alameda’s General Fund.

The budget reflects the priorities set by the Board through its adopted strategic plan, the annual strategic planning workshop held in January 2013, and the annual budget workshop held in April 2013.

Some of the major initiatives in the plan for next year include advanced technologies and business process improvements; workforce development; implementing a customer engagement platform; and greenhouse gas reduction plans. Additionally, AMP continues to take all feasible steps to control costs. The utility’s staffing levels have stayed at 1998 levels and technology solutions have been implemented and streamlined to lower operational costs.

AMP customers continue to pay significantly less for electricity than most Californians and as of January 2013, about 22 percent less than residential customers in neighboring cities like San Leandro and Oakland. These lower rates help ensure than an additional $10 million per year stays in Alameda.

AMP is one of the City of Alameda's largest businesses, serves the community with a reliability record within the top quartile of all western U.S. utilities, ranks top in the state for customer satisfaction, and is a national leader in providing renewable power.  As a 126-year-old community-owned and locally operated electric system, AMP is a direct contributor to the City of Alameda’s economic well-being and quality of life through annual transfers to the city’s general fund.

All Board materials are available on the AMP web site. AMP’s 2014 fiscal year begins on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2014.
