AMP Celebrates Public Power Week with Light Bulb Giveaway

Every October, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) takes part in a week-long national celebration of public power’s hometown advantages along with 2,000 other community-owned electric utilities. This year, AMP is celebrating Public Power Week by giving away free energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to Alameda residents during the week of Monday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 11.

The giveaways will take place at the AMP Service Center, located at 2000 Grand Street, during regular business hours (Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). CFLs are limited to two per person while supplies last. Residents should bring a copy of their most recent bill with them.

Lighting accounts for about 12 percent of the average household’s electric bill, so AMP wants to encourage Alamedans to replace their old incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs. CFLs use roughly 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last for up to seven years. Replacing just one incandescent bulb keeps 450 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb.
