Public Utilities Board Approves FY 2015 Budget
ALAMEDA, Calif. – At its regular meeting on June 23, the City of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board approved Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP) $62.4 million budget for fiscal year (FY) 2015. The Board also approved a transfer of $2.8 million to the City of Alameda’s General Fund.
The budget reflects the priorities set by the Board through its adopted strategic plan, the annual planning workshop held in January 2014, and the annual budget workshop held in April 2014.
Major projects for FY 2015 include the continued refurbishment of the city’s historic streetlights; continued work on the second electrical crossing to Coast Guard Island; implementation of a targeted metering solution for large commercial customers; replacement of two fleet cars with electric vehicles; and upgrades to transmission, distribution and substation equipment.
The budget also includes a new lighting rebate program for commercial customers; new residential energy efficiency programs including a special LED light bulb promotion; electric vehicle charging stations; and the conversion of most of the city’s streetlights to LEDs.
Several of AMP’s new programs are focused on reducing the city’s greenhouse gas emissions and are being funded by revenues received from AMP’s participation in the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standards and Cap and Trade programs.
AMP customers continue to pay significantly less for electricity than most Californians and, as of January 2014, about 21 percent less than residential customers in neighboring cities like San Leandro and Oakland. These lower rates help ensure that an additional $10 million per year stays in Alameda.
AMP is one of the City of Alameda's largest businesses. It serves the community with a reliability record within the top quartile of all western U.S. utilities, ranks highest in the state for customer satisfaction, and is a national leader in providing renewable power. As a 127-year-old community-owned and locally operated electric system, AMP is a direct contributor to the City of Alameda’s economic well-being and quality of life through annual transfers to the city’s general fund.
All Board materials are available on the AMP web site. AMP’s 2015 fiscal year begins on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2016.
