Locally Owned Utility Celebrates Public Power Week, Local Green Businesses

ALAMEDA, Calif. — During the first week of October, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) will take part in a weeklong national celebration of public power’s benefits along with 2,000 other community-owned electric utilities. To recognize Public Power Week, October 2-8, AMP will host a Shop Clean & Local week and honor the local businesses that participate in its voluntary green energy program.

Members of AMP’s Alameda Green program match up to 100 percent of their monthly electricity use with clean, renewable energy from solar projects in California and wind projects in the western United States. More than 2,100 of AMP’s residential and commercial customers now participate in the program. At Shop Clean & Local events throughout the week, residents can learn about Alameda Green and how to support local businesses that choose renewable power.

“AMP is excited to honor our local, green businesses while we celebrate Public Power Week and our role as Alameda’s non-profit provider of reliable and affordable electricity,” AMP’s Interim General Manager Liz Warmerdam said. “Our utility is not only connected to the community, it is owned by the community.”

Alameda’s 129-year-old utility has residential rates that are 30 percent less, on average, than those of nearby cities. Rates for commercial customers are, on average, 17 percent lower than neighboring communities.

  • The public is invited to visit AMP’s Shop Clean & Local table and learn how to sign up for Alameda Green at the following locations during Public Power Week:

  • Sunday, Oct. 2 – South Shore Center (between Trader Joe’s and Safeway), noon-3 p.m.
