City of Alameda's Electric Rates to Change in July
ALAMEDA, CA – Electric rates will change on July 1 for residential and commercial customers in the city of Alameda. At its April 17 meeting, the city’s Public Utilities Board approved a 5 percent overall rate increase to maintain reliable service for customers and address increased purchased power costs. While the rate increase approved by the Board averages 5 percent for all customers, the percentage of the increase will vary depending on the customer’s rate class (residential, commercial, municipal, etc.). Residential customers will see a $2 increase to the customer charge along with changes to the upper tiers of the electric charge. Commercial customers will see an increase to the electric and demand charges only. AMP continues to provide rates that average 16 percent lower than neighboring cities like Oakland and San Leandro. AMP also provides electricity that is far more reliable than that of its neighboring communities, which means fewer power outages in Alameda. The rate increase helps AMP continue to move toward a structure that ensures fairness for all customers by aligning the rates for each customer class with the cost of providing service. As a community-owned and locally operated electric system, AMP does not make a profit on rates. Revenue from electricity sales in Alameda goes toward operation of the electric system and then to improving community services and quality of life for residents through annual transfers of more than $6 million to the city’s general fund. AMP offers a variety of programs and services for customers who are interested in understanding their energy use or who are having trouble paying their utility bills. For those interested in lowering their energy usage, AMP offers energy efficiency programs and rebates to help customers conserve power. Customers can also request a free, in-home energy audit to learn how to manage their energy usage. Visit the Alameda Municipal Power website to find more information on AMP’s rates and how to manage energy usage. About AMPAlameda Municipal Power (AMP) is a department of the city of Alameda that has served residents and businesses for 132 years. AMP provides power to more than 34,000 customers at rates that average 17 percent below neighboring communities.
