Alameda Municipal Power Recognized for Restoring Island's Historic Streetlights
ALAMEDA, CA – Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) has received recognition for protecting Alameda’s heritage by restoring nearly 700 of the island’s historic streetlights. The Alameda Architectural Preservation Society (AAPS) honored AMP at its annual awards ceremony on June 4 at the Alameda Point Theater on Saratoga Avenue. AMP completed its restoration of 684 of Alameda’s historic streetlights in June 2015. As part of the restoration project, AMP replaced the corroded steel poles and refurbished and reused the shrouds, arms, and fixtures to preserve the historic character of the streetlights. The streetlights were originally installed between 1935 and 1949. The AAPS Preservation Awards showcase projects that preserve, restore or reuse historic property in a way that enhances the property’s architectural character. This is the 20th year AAPS has honored projects in the community. “AMP is honored to receive this award for its work to help preserve Alameda’s history,” said Nicolas Procos, AMP’s general manager. “As a community-owned utility, we take pride in our recent efforts to restore the island’s historic streetlights for the benefit of the public.” For more information about AMP, visit the Alameda Municipal Power website.
