Alameda Earns National Award for City's Energy Efficiency Program
Alameda was announced today as one of the nation’s top winners in the 2017 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards, an initiative sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Walmart recognizing innovative energy and climate protection efforts.. The City of Alameda was one of four small cities (under 100,000) to receive an Honorable Mention award, and one of ten cities across the country to receive awards. This award honors the success of the Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) program that focused on promoting the use of LED light bulbs. In 2015, AMP launched the Great Light Bulb Change Out campaign and mailed two free LED bulbs to each of the City of Alameda’s 30,000 households. The campaign was immediately followed by an LED rebate program called LEDMania!, which cut the cost of an LED bulb in half. The program was funded by the sale of AMP’s renewable energy credits and showed Alamedans they could save 200 kWh of energy per lamp per year by switching from incandescent to LED bulbs. In line with the City of Alameda’s Local Action Plan for Climate Protection, AMP’s program encouraged residents to use LEDs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 1,300 metric tons annually, equivalent to taking 274 cars off the road each year. “It is wonderful to have Alameda receive national recognition for our unique and meaningful local efforts, and I want to congratulate Alameda Municipal Power, the Public Utilities Board, and our entire community for leading the country in energy efficiency efforts,” stated Mayor Trish Herrera Spencer. AMP General Manager Nicolas Procos said the award-winning program shows how non-profit publicly owned utilities strengthen communities. “As a community-owned utility and department of the City of Alameda, AMP is proud to provide programs that directly benefit Alamedans and our environment.” The award was announced at the Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards event in Miami Beach on June 23. As one of the 1,408 member cities, Alameda is able to participate in a national dialogue on critical issues and innovative solutions.
