Alameda Municipal Power to Join Fleet Week Safety Demonstration

Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) will play a role in educating the public on its potential roles in emergencies in an exercise led by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) as part of San Francisco Fleet Week. An agency under the U.S. Department of Transportation, MARAD focuses on waterborne transportation matters involving national security, safety and shipping.

AMP will participate in MARAD’s emergency response demo and Fleet Week open house at Pier 50 in San Francisco from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 6.

MARAD’s ship, the MV Cape Horn, will be docked at the pier and open to the public. Under MARAD’s direction, AMP emergency response personnel will board the ship with utility trucks, which AMP would likely use in a large-scale emergency.

“AMP welcomes the opportunity to partner with MARAD at this Fleet Week safety demonstration,” General Manager Procos said. “By participating in this event, which occurs right before Public Power Week, we can inform the public about the role of community-owned utilities in emergencies.”

The exercise will showcase how multiple government agencies coordinate to respond to emergencies and assist the public. Attendees will learn how MARAD could transport heavy-duty emergency vehicles to locations impacted by natural disasters. MARAD, which has a fleet of ships berthed at Alameda Point, is one of AMP’s large commercial customers.
