Switching to Compact Fluorescent Lighting
Why CFLs Make Sense
Switching to Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) is a no-brainer when you compare it to traditional lighting.
Compact Fluorescents:
- Use 75% less electricity than a regular bulb
- Provide up to 10,000 hours (7 yrs) of light
- Require far fewer replacement bulbs
- Available in a variety of styles and colors
Regular Incandescents:
- Waste about 90 percent of their energy generating heat
- Last about 1,000 hours, or about 8.5 months of light

New Standards for Incandescent Light Bulbs
The Federal government has released new standards for incandescent light bulbs, beginning with banning the traditional 100 watt bulb. In a move to encourage energy efficiency, traditional incandescent bulbs will be replaced with newly designed, more efficient lower watt bulbs. In the following years, 75, 60 and 40 watt bulbs will also undergo the same treatment and be replaced by lower wattage models.
