Solar Power at AMP

Solar panels convert the most powerful source of light (the sun) into electricity. They are sometimes called photovoltaics (PV) which means "light-electricity". Solar cells or PV cells rely on the photovoltaic effect to absorb the energy of the sun and cause current to flow between two oppositely charge layers.

The AMP Solar PV System

In 1998, Alameda Municipal Power installed a 4-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, consisting of 78 Solarex PV panels located on the roof of our facility. These panels are installed at the optimum angle to the sun at 40 degrees, (Alameda's latitude). This maximizing exposure to the sun, and energy collection. The system output feeds directly into AMP's Service Center where it is monitored 24/7.

The system is currently delivering 16 KwH per day — nearly enough electricity to power two homes and has an expected lifetime of 30 years or more.

System Cost

Of the total cost of our system ($28,000 excluding data equipment), almost 40% was off set by a DOE Utility PV TEAM-UP Grant.

In the years since we installed our system, the cost of PV systems has continued to decline, as manufacturing has become more efficient and demand has risen. Having no fuel costs being almost maintenance free also makes solar one of the most cost-effective energy delivery system.

Long Term Benefits

Our Solar PV system has given us first hand experience in the installation and operation of solar PV systems, and the data provides real time information about solar energy here in Alameda.

Solar energy is renewable and has no harmful emissions or fuel costs. As required by the State Legislature, AMP has already developed a Rate Schedule Rider that provides net metering for residential customers with solar PV systems.
