Alameda Power & Telecom Warns Customers about Credit Card Scam

ALAMEDA, Calif., October 14, 2008 – Alameda Power & Telecom is warning customers to beware of callers demanding immediate payment on any electric,cable television, or Internet bills.

The utility reports that customers throughout Alameda have received calls from a party representing themselves as being from the Billing Department.The caller states that a recent bill has not been paid in full and immediatepayment is required to continue service. The caller requests the customer to provide a credit card number or checking account number.

Alameda Power & Telecom has notified the Alameda Police Department of this activity and has been assured that the calls will be investigated. The utility also reminds customers that, in case of delinquencies, it provides written notice to its customers first. Typically, if service is subject to termination for nonpayment, customers will be asked to bring their accountcurrent by cash, check, or money order.
